This program will provide an overview of why and how to develop a plan to reduce risk and improve safety for patients at risk for suicide in non-psychiatric settings such as an emergency room. Discussion will include the reasons it is important to address this issue now. Also summarized will be possible loss exposures and a review of the steps necessary for developing an effective plan. This includes identifying common barriers and potential resources. The format will consist of lecture with case study examples.

At the completion of this program, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify five reasons motivating the need to address suicide risk in non-psychiatric settings
  • List three sources of loss exposure related to treating patients with suicidal behaviors
  • Understand the steps necessary for developing a process for assessing suicide in a non-psychiatric setting, including identifying common barriers and potential resources
